Recently, the German IT system house aeroaccess equipped the five-storey exhibition and conference center of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore with a wireless LAN installation based on the new 802.11ac standard. This means that the 250 meeting rooms, which can accommodate up to 45,000 participants, now have high-performance wireless connections. Participants log in directly to their own company network via a secure connection.
The five-star Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore not only impresses visitors with its unusual design, in which the three hotel towers at a height of around 190 meters support a roof garden including a pool. The complex also includes a casino, a shopping center and a large conference and exhibition center. The rooms of the "Sands Expo & Convention Center" are usually booked by international companies for their presence in the Asian region. It goes without saying that a typical hotel WLAN with hotspot integration cannot always meet all customer-specific requirements.
Around 2,800 users at the same time
In this case, however, the requirements went far beyond those of a normal external event. For the parallel customer events, almost 50 rooms each had to be designed for 60 users with typical multiple use of the WLAN. Around 2,800 users were expected to be working in workshops and using business-critical applications at the same time. This required dedicated planning, both in terms of bandwidth and area-wide coverage. An additional challenge: the existing hotel WLAN had to be "circumnavigated" untouched. As the event was spread over several floors of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the complexity of the building meant that seamless coverage across critical areas had to be ensured.
International experience scores points
Due to the good results of previous projects in the campus environment and temporary installations on other occasions, those responsible decided to commission the system house aeroaccess, based in Unterföhring. The experts also impressed with their international experience in terms of logistics and rollout, as well as their proven technical expertise in the latest mobile technologies.
Via VPN into the company network
The entire installation is based on the current WLAN standard 802.11ac. It enables an increased transmission rate in the gigabit range thanks to wider transmission channels with up to 160 MHz. To illuminate the exhibition and conference center, the aeroaccess team installed access points (APs) in the halls, offices and meeting rooms. They establish a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to the parent company's data center via a dedicated Internet line. Only there is the data traffic decrypted and routed to the company network. In this way, the network provided an "in-office feeling" in separate areas across the entire event campus: despite temporary offices, employees can work as if they were logged into their company's network. aeroaccess paid particular attention to login, access and data security without creating additional hurdles for users that would make their actual tasks unnecessarily difficult.
"Using the Wi-Fi system we rented, our partner and its customers and guests at Marina Bay Sands were able to work as comfortably and with optimal performance as if they were logged into their own company's network," comments Thomas Rödel, Managing Director of aeroaccess GmbH. "We are all the more pleased that this latest generation of products will also be used in the 'home network' in the future. The installation at Marina Bay Sands is another international project that underlines our experience in the area of WLAN and guest management."
